Dancing To The Salsa Beat
Exuding elements of rumba, mambo, danzon and cha-cha, salsa dancingis a fusion of American, Cuban and Puerto Rican Latin dance cultures.
Its musical accompaniment - an eclectic mix of Spanish and African music - is similarly influenced by the music of Cuba and Puerto Rico.
The Singapore Salsa Scene
Social dancing, or the practice of exchanging dance partners frequently, is a significant feature of salsa. In a social setting, it is bad etiquette to turn down a dance offer unless there are extenuating circumstances. Hence, it is common to meet and dance with more than ten different people in a night.
Due to the social nature of this dance, people on the salsa scene are generally welcoming. This has given way to a close-knit community that is passionate about the dance, with many often volunteering to organise salsa parties and events.
Where To Dance?
If you are interested in salsa dancing, visit Union Square (located in The Amara Singapore hotel) and XenBar (located along Pagoda Street), where salsa music is played six to seven days a week.
Upper Club at Chjimes and DXO Club at the Esplanade also occasionally host salsa theme parties run by various salsa dance schools every month.
