The Venues

Almost a third of the events, including the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, will be held at Singapore’s newest addition to the Kallang area – the Sports Hub. Opened in June 2014, this iconic sports complex is the main venue for the Games and provides a multitude of facilities that are open and accessible to the general public. The National Stadium, part of the Sports Hub, is where over 50,000 spectators will bear witness to the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Other venues that will be utilised for the SEA Games include the Bedok Reservoir, East Coast Park, Marina Bay, National Shooting Centre and Turf Club Riding Centre. For the full list of venues and more information on where each event will be held, visit www.seagames2015.com/the-games/venue.

The Ceremonies

The Opening Ceremony will be held on 5 June 2015, and promises to feature a spectacle worthy of Singapore’s Jubilee celebration. While many details are still under wraps, Colonel Lawrence Lim, Chairman of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, has stated that the flame will be transported over water before being transferred to the cauldron, where it will remain lit all the way through until it is extinguished during the Closing Ceremony on 16 June 2015. Of course, the grand finale of the Opening Ceremony will not lack for grandeur with fireworks and multimedia light displays. While tickets for the Opening Ceremony are sold out, tickets for the Closing Ceremony are still available.

But not to worry if you can’t get tickets – the remarkable SEA Games cauldron, which is proudly designed and built in Singapore, is situated outdoors at the Waterfront Plaza. Standing at 19.2 metres in height and 8 metres in diameter, the stainless steel cauldron is capable of projecting flames from 1.5 to 4 metres in height and will keep the flame burning through Singapore’s changeable weather. It also has a LED screen and beam lights integrated into it, ensuring it will play a major role in the multimedia climax of the Opening Ceremony.

What’s more, the Torch Parade will take place on 4 June 2015, the day before the Opening Ceremony, so you can cheer on the torch bearers. The torch will be lit at the Marina Bay Promontory before being brought around Marina Bay and handed over to the Games officials in front of Marina Bay Sands.
