Snakes and Ladders

It is the year of the snake in the Chinese zodiac, and to celebrate, the Singapore Philatelic Museum has put up an exhibition about this fascinating reptile. Bring the kids down to discover little-known facts about snakes. The permanent galleries at the museum introduce visitors to the world of philately, the study of stamps and postal history and other related items. Museum admission rates are $6 for adults and $4 for children aged 3 to 12. Museum admission is free on New Year's Day, Chinese New Year, National Day, Hari Raya Puasa, Deepavali and Christmas Day.

Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb3

Go back in time to Ancient Egypt at the Mummy: Secrets of the Tomb exhibition. For the first time in Southeast Asia, visitors can learn the secrets of mysterious Egyptian burial practices as well as the mummification process. Witness the “virtual unwrapping” of a 3000 year old mummy in an immersive 3D experience, and view over 100 artefacts which include six exceptionally well preserved mummies from the British Museum’s extensive collection.

Singapore Street Festival 2013

piano-mar2013The Singapore Street Festival (SSF) uses street culture programmes to provide a performance platform for youths from Singapore and the region to showcase their skills and creativity. The SSF launches with the Vision into REALITY Concert and is headlined by SSF mentors and friends. Renowned artists such as Robert Fernando, Tama Goh, Khor Ai Ming and Erick Guansing among others will be sharing the stage with young performers. The SSF’s varied programme also includes a graffiti art showcase, a street dance competition, urban football freestyle competition, street magic performances and more!

Hari Raya Light Up and Celebrations 2013

8 August is Hari Raya Puasa, also known as Hari Raya Adilfitri and Eid al-Fitr. This is a religious festival that marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic holy month of fasting. To celebrate the breaking of the fast, the streets of Geylang Serai are decked with colourful lights and a huge bazaar will be set up. Treat yourself to traditional sweet treats such as kueh, or pick up some festive clothes and accessories.

Cosfest XII 2013

Join in Cosfest XII and see the best of the region’s cosplayers in action. There will be cosplay competitions, singing competitions, cosplay performances and even a maid café where the servers will be dressed in French maid-inspired costumes. Of course, you will get plenty of photo opportunities with the cosplayers too. This is an event not to be missed by those who are into Japanese pop culture.

Singapore HeritageFest 2013

Singapore may have gained independence less than 50 years ago, but it has a heritage that started long before that. Discover Singapore’s food, music, dance, art and history at the events that make up the HeritageFest. Highlights include the outdoor mega-concert Hilly Happenings @ Fort Canning Green, which will see stars such as Anita Sarawak and Inch Chua perform hits from the 1950s to the present.
