May is a month filled with exciting events. From the Singapore HeritageFest to Fashion Week, the month is buzzing with energy. Mother's Day in Singapore is on 10th May, so if you're looking for something uniquely Singaporean to experience with your mother, why not check out the free Mother's Day concerts? 


Singapore HeritageFest

With Singapore celebrating its 50th year of independence this year, is it any surprise that the 2015 Singapore HeritageFest is the largest edition to date? Spanning five weekends, you can see a different side of Singapore at events such as music performances, film screenings, heritage trails, guided tours, open houses, exhibitions and more! One of the highlights includes a night of nostalgic xinyao (a style of Chinese pop songs that originated in Singapore and attained regional success) performances at Zongshan Park on 1 and 2 May.

VERNACULA_

Vernacular: noun the language or dialect spoken by the ordinary people of a country or region.

 

This exhibition commissioned for the SG50 celebrations showcases objects, sculpture, mixed media works, photographs and time-lapse videos to present various perspectives from Singaporeans. Get a peek into the multiple social and historical narratives in Singapore at this free art exhibition.

Opening of the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (LKCNHM)

This is a good year for culture and history buffs. Not only will the National Gallery Singapore officially open its doors to the public in November, but the LKCNHM will make its collection available for public viewing from 28 April! This is Singapore’s first and only natural history museum, and highlights of the collection include three large dinosaur skeletons: diplodocid sauropods nicknamed “Prince”, “Apollonia” and “Twinky”. Tickets are not available at the door so be sure to purchase them online before heading down!

Istana Open House

As the official residence and office of the President of Singapore, the Istana isn’t usually open to the public. But on 1 May, the doors to the grounds will open for a nominal price of $1. For an additional $2, visitors can tour selected function rooms. Istana souvenirs will be available, and all proceeds (including the entrance fees) will be donated to charity. Opening hours are usually from 8.30 am to 6pm, and it can get crowded later in the day so if you’re planning on heading down, try to go early.

The Naked Museum

The National Gallery Singapore isn’t due to open until November this year, but guess what? Sneak previews are available, with one caveat – the art installations aren’t ready yet. But that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything of interest here! The historical building is replete with stories and significance, and if you were lucky enough to score passes for the building history tour, go forth and see what’s in store before the official opening.

SG50 Concert Series in the Park

The second installment of this free concert series is back! The first concert received an overwhelmingly positive response with over 8,000 people turning up to listen to homegrown stars such as Matthew and the Mandarins, Kit Chan and Olivia Ong. You can expect the second concert to be just as warmly received, and look out for fringe activities to participate in!

Mother’s Day Special Concerts

Mother’s Day is on 10 May this year in Singapore, and to celebrate there are two free concerts back-to-back at the Esplanade Concert Hall. The first, 母亲节特备节目—献给妈妈的歌, is hosted by popular getai (live stage performance) host Hao Hao and features evergreen Chinese songs performed by Zhen Ni and Chloe Lim. The second, Istimewa Hari Ibu: Khas Untukmu Ibu, is hosted by radio personality Hafeez Glamour and features Malay song performances by the Ismail family.

Singapore Fashion Week

The spotlight will be on established as well as emerging designers at this year’s Singapore Fashion Week. It will open and close with shows by Diane von Furstenberg and Victoria Beckham respectively, with Thakoon presenting his Fall 2015 collection too. Other highlights include the highly anticipated launch of COLLATE THE LABEL, a new womenswear line by style maven Velda Tan, and the latest collection by award-winning Singapore-based label Ong Shunmugam.

Blueprint

Blueprint is a key trade event held during Singapore Fashion Week, but what’s of special interest to non-trade visitors is Emporium, a two-day off-shoot of the tradeshow that allows consumers to partake in the gathering of designers with this massive shopping and lifestyle event. Shop for fashion forward samples, limited edition items and off-season collections, many of which have never been stocked before in Asia.

The Great Singapore Sale

The Great Singapore Sale (GSS) is back and it’s time to take advantage of the crazy deals around! The eight week shopping extravaganza begins on 29 May and runs through to 26 July, so you’ve got plenty of time to hunt down those bargains. Again, the official card is Mastercard so get swiping to earn rewards and exclusive privileges!
