The Singapore Tourism Board (STB) announces the launch of the International Cruise Terminal (ICT) development project at Marina South, which will target 1.6 million cruise passengers upon completion.
Projected to be ready by end of 2011, the new ICT will be a launching pad for Singapore to become Asia’s cruise hub. The new terminal is expected to cater for the anticipated expansion of the cruise industry in Asia-Pacific, which will make up 7 per cent of the international cruise market.
Minister for Trade and Industry, Lim Hng Kiang says, “The Asian cruise industry is at the cusp of significant growth, and the opportunities for the region and Singapore are tremendous. The ICT will be a strategic enabler to achieve Singapore’s aspiration to be a cruise hub of Asia and gateway to the region, and testifies to Singapore’s continued commitment to the development of the Asian cruise industry.”
In order to cater to growing demand, many international top cruise players are already increasing their presence in Asia and offering more Asian cruise itineraries, especially in Western markets.
According to figures from the Singapore Cruise Centre, over 1,000 ships called on Singapore last year, which contributes to over 920,000 passenger arrivals. These passengers are mostly from Indonesia, India, Malaysia, Australia, New Zealand and Europe - signifying Singapore’s international appeal as a cruise destination.
For the first half of this year, Singapore has already recorded 540,000 cruise arrivals. The industry is optimistic that it will welcome its one-millionth cruise passenger by Christmas. |
