5 Places to Kayak and Soak Up the Sun in Singapore

A concrete jungle? Not Singapore. This sunny island is surrounded by water, and there are plenty of water spots within the city if you fancy taking to the water.

Singapore Sports Hub

Situated right next to Kallang Basin, the Singapore Sports Hub is the first arena in the world to combine world-class sporting infrastructure for football, athletics, rugby and cricket, with community lifestyle and entertainment facilities. The integrated hub also includes a retail mall, restaurants, skate park, lawn bowl green, climbing wall, beach volleyball court, hard courts, sports library and a museum – meaning if you’ve got some energy to burn off, you’ve got a ton of choices of activities at your fingertips.

The Water Sports Centre is where you should make a beeline for if you want to get on the water. There are canoes, kayaks and pedal boats for rent, so whether you’ve got any experience or not, you can dip your toe in and take to the water.  Pedal boats are ideal for beginners and children, while experienced kayakers and canoers can challenge the 500m long Regatta course.

Rental charges are as follows:

MacRitchie Reservoir

MacRitchie Reservoir is one of four reservoirs that make up the Central Catchment Nature Reserve, the largest nature reserve in Singapore. It’s also a fantastic place to go for walking, jogging, fishing, bird watching and – of course – kayaking. The Singapore Canoe Federation has a kiosk there that rents out kayaks, so just head down to take to the water. Want something else to do? Check out more details on MacRitchie Reservior here!

Siloso Beach, Sentosa

Of course, when it comes to fun in the sun, Sentosa is the place to go. Wave House at Siloso Beach has everything you expect for a day out at the beach. Rent kayaks, banana boats, donuts, paddle boards or even water-propelled jetpacks. Want to go wakeboarding? Sure. And if you’ve got kids above the age of 3 with you, you can go on a 3-hour guided kayaking tour with them and discover some of the wonders of the sea around Singapore. And if that’s not enough, take to the FlowBarrel® sheet wave for some surfing action.

Pulau Ubin

For getting up close and personal with nature, head to Pulau Ubin. It’s a bit of a journey, and you’ll have to take a ferry to get there from Changi Point Ferry Terminal, which is just a little way away from Changi Village Bus Terminal. Tickets for the ferry cost $3 each way for a 10-minute ride. You’ll have to wait for 12 passengers to fill up the ferry, or pay the boatman to leave immediately if you don’t want to wait. Once you get off at the Pulau Ubin jetty, look for unit number 34, a white house with an Ubin Adventures signboard. They offer both kayak and bike guided tours, with different tours tailored for different experience levels. Discover mangrove habitats that are unique to this part of Asia, and if you’re lucky you’ll spot kingfishers, eagles, hornbills, herons, egrets and other beautiful birds! Do remember to book your slot with Ubin Adventures on their website at least two days in advance, and read up on what you need to bring. If you’re wondering what else is there to do on the island, we’ve got you covered!

PAssion WaVe @ Marina Bay

For a 180° change from Pulau Ubin and the mangrove swamps, head down to PAssion WaVe at Marina Bay! Situated at 11 Rhu Cross, PAssion WaVe is located within Bay East Garden – part of Gardens by the Bay. This isn’t the part of the Gardens with the Supertrees and Cooled Conservatories, though, that’s Bay South Garden. Instead, Bay East Garden is a 24-hours-open-access extension across the river. Access it from Bay South by taking a leisurely 5-minute walk across Marina Barrage.

PAssion WaVe is one of Singapore’s public Water Venture community clubs located strategically near reservoirs and other bodies of water. This enables these community clubs to offer opportunities for everyone to take part in water sports if they wish! At PAssion WaVe, you can rent closed deck as well as sit-on-top kayaks, 2 and 4 seater pedal boats, bell boats and even dragon boats if you’ve got the crew to man it. Paddle your way down this section of the Singapore River against the magnificent backdrop of Marina Bay.
