Deepavali, the Festival of Lights

The Hindu Advisory Board (HAB) has confirmed that Deepavali will fall on 22 October 2014 (Wednesday).

Deepavali, one of Singapore’s major festivities, is said to be a celebration of the victory of good over evil and the triumph of light over darkness.

There are many tales told about the celebration of Diwali. The most commonly told legend about Deepavali is of Narakasura, who once favoured by God and blessed with a kingdom to rule over. Unfortunately, Narakasura ruled in tyranny. His subjects sought the help of Lord Krishna of Narakasura. Lord Krishna defeated Narakasura and upon his return, the city was enveloped in darkness. To welcome him home, the people lit oil lamps.

Some say that Deepavali is a celebration of the victory of Lord Rama over the demon king Ravana and his return from a 14-year exile.

Many areas of Singapore are lavishly decorated for Deepavali, but no area could surpass the brilliance and splendour of Little India at this time of the year.

Expect to see shops and streets lavishly decorated with lights, garlands and arches. Of course, the best time to stare in awe at the lights would be at nightfall. Be dazzled by the Deepavali Street Light Up that stretches from Selegie Road to Serangoon Road and Race Course Road.

Don’t just see, but immerse yourself in the celebration. One traditional way to celebrate Deepavali is to get your hands painted with henna art. Local artists will usually do it for free.

Bask in the Indian culture at Hastings Road and Campbell Lane with their spread of intricate costume jewellery, ornamental decorations, ethnic wear and traditional Indian sweets. Expect a pottery making demonstration by skilled traditional craftsmen as well as extravagant performances from local celebrities and talents.

Finally, at 8 pm on the 21st of October, spare some time to experience the Deepavali Countdown Concert. The open air concert will be held at the Indian Association grounds on the eve of Deepavali to usher in the Festival of Lights.
