Traditional Chinese Medicine

TCM centres on the concept of the “Qi”, which loosely translates to “energy” and its effects on your health. The goal of TCM is to guide the body back into balance, therefore reinforcing the body’s ability to heal itself. TCM has various modalities, which are used individually or as combined treatments. Here are some of the more popular modalities of TCM:

Qigong Therapy

This uses special methods of breathing, posture and mental focus to cleanse, circulate, balance and strengthen the body’s energy system. It involves self-regulation and Qi emission.

Bodywork Therapy

Techniques such as Tui Na (a massage that is a cross between acupressure and Shiatsu); Acupressure (relieves the body of pain by massaging pressure points); and An Mo are used to influence the flow of energy into the body.

Acupuncture

Probably the most popular TCM modality, acupuncture makes use of fine, disposable and sterile needles which are used to open or close certain points along meridians (lines of energy flow). Other lesser-known techniques that fall under acupuncture are electrical stimulation through needles; moxibustion (herbal heat therapy); cupping (where suction cups are used to purge the body of toxins); scraping (also known as “coining” is a combination of cupping and a deep massage); and magnetic acupuncture (used to influence polarities of energy flow).

Chinese Nutrition Supplements

TCM is not only used for the treatment of ailments, but for general well-being as well. The shelves of TCM medical halls are lined with dietary and health supplements for the improvement of overall wellbeing. These special supplements are available in various forms such as teas, tinctures, powders, liniments, extracts, plasters, capsules and pills.

To find out which TCM therapy would work best for your unique daily needs, it is recommended that you consult with a TCM physician. As with Western Medicine, self-medication is not advised. Singapore has quite a number of TCM physicians and clinics so look for a recommended physician or simply head to one close to you the area where you currently are staying in.
